Falling Angels
Tracy Chevalier Tracy Chevalier’s masterful storytelling
abilities first caught me with her book, ‘
Girl With a Pearl Earring’ which is a story
based around Vermeer’s famous painting
of that name. It captures in a very live way,
the time in which the painter lived and the
creation of his beautiful paintings.
You are transported into a world of colour,
light, art and also human feelings and
drama. In ‘Falling Angels,’ the author
creates the atmosphere in England,
following the death of Queen Victoria.
The story begins in 1901 and closely
follows the lives of two families, the
Colemans and the Waterhouses. The main
character, Kitty Coleman, is looking for
a more significant and fulfilling life.
She believes that the death of Queen
Victoria heralds a new time with greater
chances and possibilities. We also get to
know the Waterhouse family through the
eyes of Gertrude, who wants to hold on
to the codes of behaviour that were
established during the Victorian era.
A special friendship develops between
their daughters, Lavinia and Maude, and
a gravedigger’s son, where the churchyard
is the mysterious setting and meeting
point for the main characters. The special
angle of this book is that the same occurrences
are looked at from the different
viewpoint of each of the characters.
It portrays the fact that there is always
more than one way of looking at any situation
and there
is always
another
dimension to
consider. It is
very interesting
how
the changing
times influence
the main
characters,
and it is a
fascinating
insight into
what it was
like to be at
the big suffragette gatherings of 1908.
Women from all over the country came
together in London, to state their case for
a woman’s right to vote. Most of them
had to overcome many obstacles to even
be able to attend. It gives an impression
of the power, intensity and spirit that
were at play and it makes it clear why
from that moment on, it became impossible
to ignore women and their inherent
right to vote.
