ABUSE
OF DOWRY PAYMENTS OF WOMEN IN INDIA
Police
in India are investigating claims of British Asian men marrying
Indian women and then abandoning them, after taking dowries from
their brides’ families. Thousands of Indian women are reportedly
abandoned by British Asian men who marry them for a dowry that can
be around 6,000 English pounds, and after as little as 7 days with
their bride return to England to never be heard from by their wife
again. It is claimed they take advantage of the women’s gullibility
and desperation to leave India and seek their fortune abroad.
The
Indian Police have been speaking to British authorities and it looks
like serious action may be taken against the men at long last.

SHORTAGE
OF WOMEN IN THE TURKISH PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS
Many
women in Turkey are furious about the shortage of female candidates
standing in November’s parliamentary elections. There are 550 seats
in the Turkish Parliament, but on the basis of the candidate lists
published by the political parties this week, women are unlikely
to win more than 21 of them.
A
coalition of groups representing women’s interests is calling on
its three million members to vote for those parties which promise
to do more to represent women’s interests.
The
tiny proportion of women in parliament has barely increased since
the early days of the Turkish Republic. In other words, outside
of Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey is still a male-dominated society.
This is certainly reflected in the distribution of seats amongst
party candidates. Those women who have been selected say they have
been assigned seats they could never possibly win. They also complain
that the proportion of women in the next parliament is unlikely
to be above 4%.
Bilge
Digleli is a leading member of the coalition: “We are going to advise
our members to vote for the party which has put women candidates
in eligible places,” she says. “We are trying to say to the political
parties - we shall forget those who forget us. They do not think
about attracting women’s votes but many things change in Turkey
as well and we hope that women voters vote according to what parties
promise for them”. The women hope that the prospect of securing
three million votes will be enough to change party attitudes.

MORE
AND MORE FEMALE PHYSICIANS (IN THE NETHERLANDS)
This
is already a trend for years and is still persisting. These days
2 out of 3 phycisians are of the female gender. It is expected that
in 4 years time, more than 70% of the physicians will be women.
More often than their male colleagues, the female physicians work
part time. Also more than half of the functions of phycisians in
nursing homes is fulfilled by women. Developments in the job category
of medical specialists show a similar, but slower trend. It is expected
that in 2010, 1 out of 3 specialists will be of the female gender.

‘BOSSY’
WOMEN PRODUCE SONS
According
to recent research conducted in New Zealand and England, 80% of
women who have a dominant nature give birth to sons. The proposed
reason for this is that bossy or dominant women have a higher amount
of testosterone than their calmer sisters and this is a greater
home for Y-chromosomes, which is a determining chromosome for the
male gender.

IRONING
FOR MEN
Philips,
a Dutch international company, recently launched a national campaign
'Ironing for Men'. With this campaign Philips wants to help men
with ironing, which apparently most of them still find the least
attractive job in the household. For this campaign a small booklet
has been produced, which provides backgrounds, knowledge and practical
guidelines about the phenomenon Ironing.

WOMEN
AND UNEMPLOYMENT
According
to a report of CBS (research bureau in the Netherlands) the unemployment
rate amongst men is growing faster than amongst women. Compared
to the same period in 2001, the amount of unemployed men grew by
23.000, whilst the number of unemployed women grew by 8.000. This
is why the difference between the percentages of unemployment between
men and women is becoming smaller. However, the unemployment rate
of women is still higher. Currently 2,3% of men are unemployed,
against 1,6% a year ago. The unemployment percentage for women currently
stands at 2,6%. According to the CBS, the smaller difference between
the unemployment of men and women has been caused by the 4% growth
of jobs in the medical sector in the first half of the year 2002,
which often have been fulfilled by women. `Women benefit more of
the increase of jobs in the medical sector than men, according to
researcher Mr. Lucassen'.
